StepChange does not cancel plans for one missed payment, especially when circ*mstances are outside your control, but other providers may. However, we may have to cancel a DMP if there are multiple missed payments.

Entering a debt management plan is free to clients if it's provided by StepChange Debt Charity. Other providers may charge a percentage of the money you pay to them.
Avoiding payment also means that creditors can sue you for unpaid bills. In some states, you could get your wages garnished or have your assets seized. You're still paying your outstanding debt even if you aren't making the payments directly.
Your debt will go to a collection agency. Debt collectors will contact you. Your credit history and score will be affected. Your debt will probably haunt you for years.
A credit counselor can help you. Credit counselors can help you make a budget. Credit counselors also can help you make a plan to repay your debts. Debt relief services companies might offer to help.
"Would recommend!! Amazing helped me immensely, especially with the cost of living going up and the financial pressure it put on myself and my family. I am budgeting and able to pay my debts less stressed and able to sleep better at night thank you."
A reputable credit counseling organization can give you advice on managing your money and debts, help you develop a budget, offer you free educational materials and workshops, and help you make a plan to repay your debt.
You may get a default notice or 'notice of default' if you miss or do not make agreed payments. This is recorded in your credit file and can affect your credit rating. An account defaults when you break the terms of your agreement.
If you miss a repayment, a $10 late fee may apply, and you won't be able to spend with StepPay until you have enough available funds in your repayment account. If late fees are applied, they are capped at: 1 late fee per instalment (there are 4 instalments per purchase) 2 late fees per purchase.
Your credit history starts to look better after your DMP. Information like missed payments or court action is removed after six years. If an account has defaulted, the debt is removed six years after the default.
When you cancel, the provider will tell your creditors, so they might start charging you interest and late payment fees again, as well as expecting you to resume higher payments. You'll also have to deal with your creditors yourself again. Think about how you're going to cope with this.
If the creditor doesn't want to deal with the DMP provider, they can still take action to recover the money you owe, which might include taking you to court. If this applies to you, ask the creditor why they're not willing to co-operate with the DMP.
